Frequently asked questions

The questions we get the most, with short straight answers — formats, performance, ownership of AI variants, browser support.

What is Charios?

A browser-based 2D character animation tool. You drop layered art onto a humanoid skeleton and apply mocap clips to animate it. Output goes to GIF, Unity, Godot, or Unreal Engine 5. See Welcome for a fuller intro.

Do I own the characters and animations I make?

Yes. Charios doesn't claim copyright on anything you create. Your character art is yours; the animations applied to it are yours; the export bundles are yours. You can sell games made with Charios, distribute the assets, license them, redistribute them — anything you'd do with assets you made entirely yourself.

What about AI variants — who owns those?

You do. Charios uses Vertex AI to regenerate your sprites; the outputs are derivative of your input art and are owned by you under our terms. We don't claim rights to AI-generated variants and we don't use your art to train any model.

What browsers are supported?

Any modern desktop browser with WebGL 2.0 — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Brave, Arc, Vivaldi. Mobile browsers can view projects but the editor is desktop-only for now. See Browser & device support.

Can I use Charios offline?

No. Charios is a SaaS — your projects live in our database and load on demand. We don't have an offline mode. The editor runs entirely in your browser once loaded, but loading requires an internet connection.

How big can my character be?

We've tested up to ~80 layers per character without performance issues. Asset size caps are 4 MB / PNG on Free, 25 MB / PNG on paid plans. If you need more, contact us.

Can I animate non-humanoid characters?

Charios is designed around the humanoid rig. You can apply human mocap to a non-humanoid silhouette (a robot with humanoid proportions, a cat-person, an alien with two arms / two legs / a head), and it'll work. A quadruped or a tentacled creature won't — there's no path right now to use Charios for those.

If I delete my account, what happens to my projects?

Everything is deleted — projects, layer PNGs in storage, AI variants, billing history. We don't keep a backup. Export anything you want before cancelling.

Can I sign in with email/password instead of Google?

Not currently. We use Google OAuth as the only sign-in method. If your studio requires SSO with another provider for compliance, we can scope this on an Enterprise contract — contact us.
